We decided to skip the 30+ hour bus from Laos to Vietnam and instead jumped on a plane from Vientiane to Vietnam’s capital, Hanoi. We arrived about 4 days ago and made our way to Cat Ba island, about a 7 hour mission from Hanoi.
Cat Ba was a bit of a ghost town at this time of year as it’s currently winter, however there were still a few tourists scattered around. We found ourselves a nice $10 hotel with views over the bay and arranged a full day cruise for the next day to take us through Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay. The cruise was really good – we cruised across to Monkey Island, kayaked through Ha Long Bay, Liam went for a swim and we checked out a floating fishing “village” in Lan Ha Bay that more or less farms fish to sell, mainly to Thailand.
The next morning before we caught our ferry back to the mainland, we hired a scooter and headed to the Cat Ba island national park where we climbed up one of the many mountains to a view point over the island. We thought we were going to see the view out of the ocean, but it turns out it was only a view of inland…. which makes sense, considering it was in the middle of the island. Didn’t really think that one through, but nice to see all the same!
