Kong Lor Cave

We decided to split up the journey between 4000 islands and Vientiane by stopping halfway to check out a cave called Kong Lor. The trip out to the cave turned out to be a mission in itself, but it was worth it in the end.

Kong Lor cave is 7.5km long and you can get a boat right the way through it, emerging at the other end into a green valley surrounded by huge limestone cliff faces after about 45 minutes. While the majority of it is in total darkness with only your headlights to see, they have a stretch that lights up all the stalactites and stalagmites which you can walk through. You wouldn’t want to get lost in there though – on our way back through the driver switched off the engine and we turned of our headlamps and couldn’t see our hands in front of our faces.

Yesterday we caught a bus to Vientiane and then an overnight bus to Luang Prabang where we are (thankfully) going to be spending the next 5 days. It’s raining today, however, so we’re happily spending time in bed after a fairly bumpy ride last night.
